When you write for yourself you often forget that sometimes your writing is not perfect. This was never thrown in such bright relief to me as the day i put up this site for review on the Digital Point Forums on which my website was taken apart piece by piece and blasted by a multitude of professional editors and writers.
Now for me this highlighted one of my fatal flaws. When I work for other people I am fastidious, I spellcheck and edit my work, read through it, send it off as a draft, work on any comments the customer has made, re-spellcheck, re-edit and sometimes even send to be reviewed be other people if it is a large document.
On my personal sites however the reviewers tore me to shreds. They through up error upon error where I had not re-read my work, nor edited it. On some occasions I had not even got around to spellchecking, the most basic of things a freelance writer must do!
Oops…
So I thought I would take my own stupidity and just it on this website as a sshining lesson to all writers out there. Even if you are not working for someone else always keep the quality of your work at the forefront of your mind. It is imperative that you maintain a high quality of writing even if you are just creating a small article for a personal website.
So from now on I will be working for myself as I do for others,
- Draft Version
- Read Through and Corrections
- Spellcheck
- Redraft if Required
- Second Read Through & Spellcheck
- Publish
Hopefully if I keep this kind of action plan up the quality on my websites will be maintained and my reputation as a writer remains.
I now it seems like quite a lot of ectra work, even for the longer posts, but personally I believe that quality is key to success. By failing to apply the same standards of writing to myself that I do for others I am letting myself down, losing myself money and even worse losing possible clients.
