To work as a freelance writer it is highly important that you can think creatively and have a wide breadth of knowledge and experiences under your belt. You need to be able to relate to a huge number of different topics from a myriad of viable viewpoints.
For this reason I strongly suggest that as a writer you travel whenever you get the opportunity, talk to new people, see new things and expand your horizons.
The great thing about being a freelance writer is that you can infact work from pretty much anywhere, as long as you have something to write with you can always type it up and send it off later, whether it’s to a client or a website you run.
I find that when I am abroad and working new places give me new ideas. The beer gardens of Munich, the beaches of Barcelona, the sprawling canals of Venice, each containing a culture so significantly different and so enormously compelling that you find yourself thinking of your writing, your life and yourself from a whole new perspective. Doing this will massively increase teh quality of your writing, not because it increases your vocabulary or gives you stories to tell, but because it changes who YOU are, you find yourself with a more vibrant powerful writing style.
While you can easily become a successful writer without the travelling experience it is clear for anyone to see that the writing of someone who has travelled a lot in his life outshines tht of someone who has never left their home city.
Take the travel writer Mark Moxon. This man has an amazingly witty and compelling writing style, as he tells of his travels around the globe he entertains his readers and manages to sell his products without even sounding like a salesman simply because his writing is so captivating and entertaining, so blatantly obvious that you find yourself liking the Author for who he is, never mind what he has written!
From what I have seen and done I would say that travelling and working from locations around the world is a key factor in becoming a successful freelance writer.
