Procrastination - The Freelance Killer

June 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Procrastination is when you find your mind drifting away from work, instead of writing that article you were meant to get done you find yourself doodling on some paper, watching a tv show you don’t even like or simply daydreaming the day away.

The fact is that procrastination is the number one reason why start up freelance writers fail.  Instead of keeping their site content updated and useful they find themselves doing last minute bodge jobs, with a lot of waffle and little real content.

For this reason building motivation for what you are doing is the best way to build up a momentum to keep your business prospering.

This all may seem very obvious, but I know how often I find myself dreamily looking out of my window rather than at the computer screen, sat there figuring out some unimportant problem or simply reading random websites in an exercise of boredom.

Fortunately there are several ways to avoid procrastination and the problems it brings.

First of there is the key words discipline.  You have to regiment yourself a little bit.  The best way of doing this is by time management, allocate blocks of time for working and during those hours put yourself in an environment with few distractions so you can crack on with your work.

The second best way is to pick your jobs.  If you do something you don’t like your mind WILL wander.  Instead move onto a subject that you feel more motivated for at the time.

Sometimes I like to write about technology, sometimes about travelling and sometimes (Today for instance) I am in the mood for jotting down some hints on effective freelance working.

By writing about what my mind is attuned for that day I find that I procrastinate less, work harder and enjoy what I do.  When I have to force myself to work on a subject when I do not feel in the mood I find myself drifting away, getting distracted and actually finding things to do simply to avoid the imminent job.

The key to avoiding procrastination is quite simply to make your Job the procrastination, make writing the thing you do when you are bored and make sure you enjoy what you are doing.

If you do not enjoy yourself you will find yourself trying to find something that you do enjoy, and that thing will most likely not bring in the cash!
